BRIEF HISTORY OF THE HOME-START

Bernard, with the family he has been visiting for 6 months

In 1999, Laurence Relin, living in London, became a volunteer for "Home-Start".  Returning to France in 2002, she noticed the lack of family support of this type in France.  She decided to set up a project inspired by Home-Start in Nîmes, in southern France.

In 2005, she made a preliminary study towards a Master's degree in Social Development.  After completing her training, she formed the Paseo Association and became a member of Home-Start Worldwide.

DESCRIPTION OF OUR ACTIVITIES

We assist families with one or more children under five years of age, by fostering the development of a relationship with other parents.  The goal is to enable parents to achieve or retrieve their autonomy as parents, and thereby enable the children to grow in good conditions.

Children having fun

There is no intention to replace the many professionals already active with families in difficulty, but rather to develop the type of support which prevents exclusion and maintains social cohesion.

All our volunteers are parents themselves. With their own parenting experience, they can offer help and a friendly listening ear.  Visits take place weekly in the family’s home for a period of one year. The fact that they are not professionals makes it easier for them to work at the homes of the families.

Paseo helped 23 families and 89 children in 2014. Most families come from North Africa and have large families. About a third of them do not have French as their mother tongue. More than ten of these families have more than 3 children. Once a month the families and volunteers get together to play, and in the summer we get together twice a week for outdoor playgroups.

Our funding comes from the local town hall, the state and the departmental board. ?For the moment there is only one scheme in France.

  • We will support charities or individuals interested in the HSW way of helping families.
  • Increase the number of families helped.
  • Develop our playgroups, and run them hopefully once a week rather than once a month.
