Origins

Denmark is a small country – the land where Hans Christian Andersen lived and wrote his fairy tales – a land with real princes and princesses.

But even in this country family life with small children can be a challenge. Home-Start in Denmark offers support to families with children, who have not yet started school (under 6 – 7 years). The support contains practical help, someone to talk to and friendship.

The National office opened in 2006. We have 11 schemes and a strong network around the organisation which include many professionals and private friends of 292 volunteers supporting 330 families, Home-Start Familiekontakt Denmark has a patron and a national Ambassador who is the former Prime Ministers wife.

Our work

There has been a lot of interest from local communities for creating new local schemes supporting home visiting. The municipalities are in many cases prepared to support the local schemes financially. Our funding is from private and state sources. We participate in political meetings, work with sponsors, join national and local networks and have created a group of ambassadors.

Plans for the furutre

We wish to create 10 more schemes and employ 1 more person at our national office.

How to support Home-Start Denmark

Home-Start Denmark needs all the support we can get!
You can help us in many different ways:

  • Be a volunteer – contact the local organizer in your community
  • Form a local scheme – join or create a group of interested, local people, who care about children and family life – and contact the national office
  • Be an ambassador – tell everyone you know about Home-Start and our activities. Pass on information about Home-Start in Denmark to people you know or meet.

You can get more information about Home-Start in Denmark at the Danish website: www.home-start.dk
