About us

We work to be the bedrock of our global community, shaping the future of the Home-Start model of support and empowering our members in their vital work with families.

We connect our members together, ensuring that they operate to the highest standards, and enhance their work with international resources, expertise and experience.
What we do

Our members are grassroots organisations that expertly tailor the help they offer to families in their own communities.

We connect them together as a single, collaborative community, while they keep their local independence.

Our members get inspiration, fresh perspectives and invaluable resources because their colleagues work in different countries, cultures and economies.

As a community, we can quickly identify and respond to new needs, constantly improving and diversifying the support offered to families. We help our members operate to the highest standards and build the practical foundations they need to thrive.

Our history

Home-Start was founded in the UK in 1973, based on the principle that struggling families could be best supported in their own homes. Our founder, Margaret Harrison, believed that friendship and support should be offered from one parent to another, and tailored to each family’s needs.

The early years of development are so crucial for a child, and parenthood is fraught with so many challenges. This simple, empathetic, and deeply personal approach made a profound difference, and soon inspired other groups across the UK and beyond.

Today there are Home-Starts in 20 countries, and while volunteer home visits are still at the heart of their work, they are now complemented by a host of other services.

Home-Start Worldwide was created to be the custodian of Margaret’s method of support, as it is shaped into new, powerful forms across the world. We hold every Home-Start together as a single community, continuing her legacy into the next fifty years.
