Uganda
Home-Start Uganda, launched in 2003 by Charles Mugasa, operates across four regions, including Kampala and Gulu, with 140 trained volunteers. Addressing severe poverty, the impact of AIDS, and the aftermath of a 20-year civil war, Home-Start Uganda focuses on child-headed families and those led by elderly grandparents. Charles developed the Protect and Prosper Programme (PPP) to enhance basic home-visiting with education on nutrition, hygiene, and positive parenting. Volunteers assist families until the youngest child is 8, teaching them self-sufficiency skills like micro-gardening. Despite limited resources, they have served 200 families with nearly 600 children. The program has received support from international foundations and aims to expand its grassroots impact.
