HOME-START was introduced in Denmark in 2002 by Lone Møller, a Danish social worker who saw the need for voluntary family support. Officially founded in 2005, HOME-START Denmark operates through a national board, a secretariat, and 15 independent local schemes across 16 municipalities. These local schemes, funded primarily by municipalities with additional support from grants and thrift stores, are managed by local boards and coordinators. The coordinators handle volunteer recruitment, family matching, and ongoing support, while the national board focuses on strategic oversight and maintaining quality standards. The national secretariat supports local schemes through competence building, quality assurance, and advocacy, aiming to expand HOME-START’s reach across Denmark. Funding for the secretariat comes from private foundations, government grants, and fees from local schemes, with ongoing efforts to secure stable government funding to sustain and grow the organisation.
