Malta

Home-Start Malta is a community-based family support service that first started in 2006 with the support of Agenzija Appoġġ, inspired by the internationally recognised Home-Start model. Initially focused on families in the inner harbour area, the service grew over time and expanded its reach across Malta, with a dedicated scheme established in Gozo in 2012. Training and ongoing collaboration with Home-Start partners abroad helped shape a strong foundation for the service locally.

Today, Home-Start Malta continues to evolve as a voluntary support service within the social welfare landscape, supported primarily through the Ministry for Family, Children’s Rights and Social Solidarity via the Foundation for Social Welfare Services. At its heart are our trained volunteers — parents and caregivers with lived experience — who build respectful, trusting relationships with families in their homes, offering practical support, encouragement, and companionship during challenging times.

Our aim is to remain as open, accessible, and community-centred as possible. We focus on strengthening families’ own skills and confidence by listening, empowering, and walking alongside them — rather than prescribing solutions. This commitment includes nurturing our volunteer community, offering meaningful training opportunities, and creating welcoming spaces where families of all backgrounds can receive support that respects their dignity and unique needs.
